Why 11 Days of Global Unity?
It seems that the people of the world can live out of fear or out of faith.
Fear feels terrible. It puts our bodies into the “fight or flight” response in which our adrenaline pumps, our heart rate and breathing accelerates, our blood vessels constrict to many internal processes, while blood vessels to our limbs dilate or expand. In other words, a rush of chemicals (created to allow us to run from an approaching predator) flood our body, and are not run off as we sit in our chairs and worry. Therefore, our bodies experience stress in often deep and continuous ways.
What do we fear? Often we fear the unknown and the different such as the neighbors we haven’t met or people who come from other countries, cultures or religions that we have stereotyped. We fall into fear when we imagine the worst. Then we tend to draw the very thing we fear to us through the power of our thoughts and the vibrations of our emotions.
Fear seems to be contagious. Children pick up fear from parents and older siblings, even if they are not consciously taught to fear. Differences easily become points to prove others wrong, or hate or kill. Living out of fear produces violence often in the name of “right” whether it be gangs or neighborhoods, religions or nations at war.
So what is the alternative to violence and war?
Faith. Faith in the roots of our faith traditions which were each formed teaching respect for all people and religions. Faith in theTruths that underlie each belief system. Faith in the Sacred that lies within all creation. Faith in ourselves to be lead by our inner wisdom, our God, to live in love, and to respond in and as love to all of our neighbors and our enemies.
In order to respond in love we must find ways to get to know each other and to know about each other. We must put aside the skewed media portrayals of various religious groups and find out for ourselves about others from them. No one can do this work for us and the cost to humanity and the earth is too high for us to neglect this duty.
“There will be no peace among the nations without peace among the religions and no peace among the religions without dialogue.”
--Fr. Hans Kung
Most of us would find it difficult walking into a mosque or synagogue or other religious service alone, for no special reason, although I am sure we would be welcomed. However, during the “11 Days of Global Unity: a Season of Interfaith Celebration” we have created an easy way to gain first-hand information as well as to build relationships across religious boundaries. It is this work that I believe will indeed save us from unneeded stress, teach our youth to honor differences rather than to fight over them, and build a consciousness of faith (instead of fear) that spans the globe with a new consciousness of love.
Please become a part of 11 Days of Global Unity: a Season of Interfaith Celebration September 11 to 21 by participating in the film festival, the many shared faith events, and the community activities that will draw us together as create a world that works for all.
